As the poorest country in the western hemisphere, daily life is a struggle of survival for the people of Haiti. There is only one physician for every 17,064 inhabitants (total population is about 9 million). In addition, the average life expectancy is only 53 years of age. About 80 percent of the population lives below the poverty line and there are nearly 200,000 homeless children that live in Haiti's captital city, Port-Au-Prince. In addition, nearly half of all primary-aged children are not attending schools and Haiti has an overall illiteracy rate of about 53 percent, the highest in the Americas.
